Digital vs. Analog

Around 2017, I noticed a weakness developing in my right hand. I had received a diagnosis of arthritis, so I assumed it was par for the course. It turned out to be more complicated, and I underwent two surgical procedures in 2019 to remedy the problem, but the thought of not being able to use my hand was concerning.

During that time, I also realized that I was not handwriting as much as I used to. I think the whole world is not handwriting as much as we used to. I didn’t want to lose this skill, so I started forcing myself to write by hand (with paper and pen) every day.

In our modern, digital world, it is efficient to use a paperless system. It is faster and less space-consuming. I choose to receive all bills, statements, and documents via email whenever possible. The problem is that I lost a task that required handwriting.

I still use a digital calendar and task manager. I couldn’t accomplish a thing without both of these tools. However, I’ve also decided to maintain a paper system as well. Instead of using it for scheduling and day-to-day tasks, I will make notes, track progress, journal, and record each day, on paper, in handwriting.

So I am curious. I have some questions, and I would appreciate it if you could respond in the comments below.

1. Do you prefer a digital or analog system for calendar and task management?

2. If analog, is there a particular technique you use? (E.g., Bullet Journal, DayTimer, etc.)

3. Do you think it’s possible to work efficiently with a hybrid approach?
