Seasons of Grief and Grace
I believe we are always learning from the people and situations that surround our daily lives. Every encounter shapes us. God uses these moments—both joyful and painful—to teach us, to prepare us, and sometimes to strengthen us for what lies ahead. When we pause long enough to notice, we can often glimpse the wisdom hidden in the midst of our circumstances.
After the sudden death of my beloved brother Jon in August, I entered a season of deep grief. Yet even in sorrow, I have been reminded that I am not alone. My past experiences with loss, and the privilege of walking alongside others in their grief, have prepared me for this time.
"There must be those among whom we can sit down and weep, and still be counted as warriors." — Adrienne Rich
It is through shared grief that I have learned the most about life. I have been blessed with extraordinary people who have shown me what it means to grieve with both grace and resilience. My dearest friend Joan lost her beloved husband in August 2023. Her openness and vulnerability have been a precious example of how to keep living in the midst of sorrow. And now, my sweet sister-in-law Sue inspires me daily with her devotion and service to my brother, even in his absence. They are both warriors who weep, and it has been my honor to weep with them.
Life moves in cycles, marked by beginnings and endings, much like the seasons of the year. Recognizing the season we are in allows us to pause and acknowledge it for what it is. Whether it is blessing, abundance, grief, or loss, each season carries its own lessons. And none of them last forever. We learn this truth most clearly through the stories of those who have gone before us—stories that remind us we are never walking alone.
What season are you in right now—one of abundance, loss, or quiet transition? Take a moment to name it, honor it, and reflect on what it might be teaching you. If you feel comfortable, share your story in the comments. You never know who might need the encouragement of your words, or how your story might become part of someone else’s healing.
