It Was Good (Enough)

When God created the world, He didn’t sit back and say… “Gee, I guess it’s ok. I wish I had done this/that differently.” He didn’t look at it and think, “Well, I can’t show it to anyone because it’s not perfect,” or “It’s not as good as my neighbor’s.

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” — Genesis 1:31

God didn’t think to himself… “Well, next time I’ll do it differently. I’ll do it better.” God lived in the moment (the only place God exists) and appreciated what he had created. God didn’t compare His world to anyone else’s. He didn’t criticize His creation. He appreciated it. God kept creating and, in turn, became more creative each day. (Until he rested.)

We are created in God’s image, and therefore we are called to respond to our creations in the same manner. Too often, we criticize ourselves so much that it’s easier not even to try. That’s not what God did, and we shouldn’t either. The fear of failure often prevents us from taking action. Creating is what keeps us engaged in the world around us. It doesn’t even matter what you create. (Unless it’s chaos.) 😉

Done is better than perfect.

So if you’re looking for permission, here it is. Do the thing. Arrange the flowers, plant the garden, paint the canvas, take a photo, build something, sing a song, and dance to the music. I promise it will be good; if not the first time, then after some practice. Just keep creating. It is our gift from God to participate in his divine life.
