The Value of a Story
I’ve always been fascinated by stories and the way they bind us together. The Old Testament is filled with them, and Jesus carried on this tradition through His parables. Our love for stories is woven into our God-given nature—we can’t help but be captivated by them.
"History is not written by the winners or losers, it is written by who tells the best story.” — Mark Manson
Several months ago, I shared the story of my brother’s car. Recently, the current owner reached out to me again, and together we dug even deeper into its history. He has compiled thick files of documents, photos, and eyewitness accounts—an archive of the car’s past. Just when I thought the story was complete, he revealed a new theory. There’s a unique detail about the car, and he believes there are only two possible explanations. After extensive research, he’s convinced there’s a 99% chance one of them is true. He’s still piecing the story together.
But why does it matter?
When I asked if his findings would change the car’s value, he didn’t hesitate: yes. If two cars are identical in style, condition, and appearance, the one with the better story will always be worth more. Everyone loves a good story, and this car’s unique history dramatically increases its value.
That conversation made me reflect on the deeper value of stories in our lives. Stories connect us. They form the foundation of relationships, families, and communities. They remind us that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. And while telling our own stories is important, listening to the stories of others is just as vital.
Sharing stories is where genuine connection begins—just as God intended.
