Fan Girl
When I realized we would be in the Lake Tahoe area at the same time as a celebrity golf tournament, I knew Leroy would love to go. He went online and bought tickets. I agreed to go with him, but I would have been happy to give my ticket away if someone else was interested. I thought it would be boring. Leroy read the list of previous attendees, and two names caught my attention: Ray Romano and Joe Pavelski.
Ray is the star of my favorite sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Leroy and I have seen every episode (several times), and we can quote most of the big lines. Joe Pavelski is a hockey player who played for the San Jose Sharks and is Steel’s favorite athlete. I was determined to get both autographs.
John and Anne joined us in the morning of one of the practice rounds at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament at Edgewood in Lake Tahoe. None of us really knew how it worked, but the day was beautiful and we were up for anything, so we just followed Leroy. It didn’t take long for all of us to get into the spirit of the day. We were having fun before we knew it.
I realized early that I am not very good at recognizing celebrities and famous athletes. Leroy had to point out and name each one as they came along. Steph Curry’s group was the first we saw tee off, but I wouldn’t have known who it was just by appearance.
It didn’t take long to find Joe Pavelski. Of all of the golfers we saw that day, Joe was the best. Steel told me that he’s good at everything he does, and I can see it. I watched him sign autographs and engage with the crowd, which helped build up my courage. When he hopped into a cart, I jumped to his side and held out my hand for a high-five; he reciprocated and even included a little grip. I was stunned. (One of the staff members told Leroy that the hockey players are always the most respectful and friendly participants.)
After he putted, I called out to him from the side and he walked right over to me for a signature. He was so kind. This was a sentimental interaction for me. Joe Pavelski and the NHL played a big part in Steel’s life during the recovery from his leg injury in September 2012. I was too choked up to speak, but my heart was full of gratitude. I hope he felt my appreciation.
It seemed like all of the spectators wanted to see Ray Ramano. We had to wait for him, and the closer he got, the more the crowds filed in. At his first hole, there was a throng of people yelling for him. As I passed by a group of people, I heard a guy say, “Oh, I love that show. We watch it every night.” (Me too, buddy. Me too.) I had to fight for Ray, but he was worth it. Joe signed the cover of the program, and Ray signed the back.

Josh Allen never passed a fan who asked for an autograph or picture.
Charles Barkley is more attractive in person, but his body is worn out.
Emmitt Smith looks like he did in his playing days, except for the gray beard.
Joe Buck (whom I didn’t care for as an announcer) was kind to everyone.
Joe Thiesman’s right leg shows no sign of his horrible injury.
Jerry Rice looks like he could still catch a pass in the NFL.
Miles Teller is very handsome.
I wouldn’t usually choose to watch the end of a golf tournament, but I was glued to the TV for this one because Joe Pavelski held the lead for most of the time. He ended up winning for the first time in his nine appearances. I can’t think of a better reward for the guy.
