Buc-ee’s
Leroy usually makes a trip to Texas at least once a year. The last time I went with him (my first time in Texas) was four years ago. Since that time, I’ve become aware of the existence of “Buc-ee’s” and have wanted to see one for myself. Lucky for me, the second-largest Buc-ee’s is in Amarillo, where Leroy flies into on his annual trips. This year, I tagged along. There’s nothing I love more than a roadside attraction!
If you’re not familiar with what a “Buc-ee’s” is, the best way to explain it is a truck stop on steroids. (Except semis are not allowed.) There is 74,000 square feet of food and fun, 108 fueling stations, and it employs over 400 people. They are open 24/7 and have just about anything you could want or need, including the cleanest bathrooms I’ve seen in the US. The Buc-ee’s in Amarillo is number 66 and located on Route 66. (How cool is that?)
Buc-ee’s is best described as Souvenir Heaven, featuring branded apparel and home decor. But I have to say, my favorite was the selection of food items; not only was there a “Great Wall of Jerky,” but there was also a refrigerated case filled with fresh jerky! Who could ask for anything more?! (They even sold edible cookie dough in the dessert area.)
When telling a friend about our trip to Texas and our excitement for our first experience in a Buc-ee’s, he said, “Kelli might be a redneck.” Well, there’s no might. I love stuff like this. It was just like my long desire to see a Piggly Wiggly, but this time, my expectations were exceeded. I’m already looking forward to a repeat trip!
